An independent judiciary and the existence of effective mechanisms for preventing and combating corruption are the foundation of the rule of law, essential for the country’s sustainable development, a functional democracy, and the protection and realization of human rights. After gaining independence in 1991, the Republic of Moldova began a transition toward a governance system based on democracy and the rule of law.
Justice is perceived by society as being dependent on the political class, severely affected by corruption, and compromised by the integrity of the actors within the system, often acting primarily in corporate interests. Judicial reform and the fight against corruption have become central themes and national priorities, especially after the Republic of Moldova became a candidate country for European Union membership, which set forth a series of conditions targeting these areas.
The Justice Reform and Anti-Corruption Forum is designed as a space for professional discussions and debates among key actors in the justice sector, politicians, civil society, and development partners to identify feasible and effective directions for enhancing the announced reforms in the areas of justice and anti-corruption and to reduce the associated risks.
